BANYUWANGI, May 2, 2025. The Financial Services Authority (OJK) Jember, in collaboration with the Banyuwangi Regency Government and PT Bank Pembangunan Daerah Jawa Timur Tbk (Bank Jatim), held the first Kick Off in Banyuwangi for the launch of the National Financial Literacy Month for students on Friday (2/5). Located at SDN Kepatihan 1 Banyuwangi, the event was attended by the Head of OJK Jember Muhammad Mufid, Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani, and Bank Jatim Director of Micro, Retail, and Sharia Business R. Arief Wicaksono.
Arief explained that 1,000 students had their accounts opened at Bank Jatim during this financial literacy month activity in Banyuwangi. "Financial literacy is the way to manage and make wise decisions regarding finances, such as budgeting, saving, investing, and other financial products healthily. With this activity, we want to teach students to be diligent in saving from an early age, manage finances wisely, and apply better financial practices. Furthermore, they will receive continuous mentoring and workshops," he stated.
Arief said that from an early age, students should be taught to save and manage their finances, one way being through Bank Jatim's Simpel Savings. This is to ensure that the level of financial inclusion and literacy among students can continue to increase in the future. "In line with OJK's program, we are also continuously active in educating the public to instill a culture of saving from an early age. Because, by habitually teaching children to save, it is also teaching them to value a process," he elaborated.
In addition, he believes that the culture of saving will not only become a habit but also an investment in the sustainability of the future young generation. By instilling this culture, his party is confident that this can be a gateway for the young generation to manage finances more wisely and realize an inclusive generation. "This financial literacy program not only targets students but can also target various elements of society," Arief asserted.
Meanwhile, Mufid also said that this kick off from Banyuwangi is the first time and will be followed up in other regions across Indonesia. "Through this program, school students in Banyuwangi Regency will be introduced to financial literacy. Financial literacy needs to be taught to school children from an early age, one way is by starting to set aside pocket money for saving," he said.
With financial literacy, his party strives for this student savings to be sustainable. "We hope students can consistently save and use their money appropriately, for that we will build the ecosystem. For example, their teachers and parents will also receive financial literacy support," Mufid added.
Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani appreciated the efforts of OJK and Bank Jatim to continuously educate the young generation of Banyuwangi on financial literacy from an early age. "Financial literacy is an important part of education for children's future provision and this is also a concrete form of the importance of collaboration and the involvement of many parties in the world of education, including financial institutions and banking," she said.
Ipuk added that early financial literacy will help students manage their finances more wisely. It does not only form a saving habit but can also avoid consumerist behavior. "By knowing financial literacy, children begin to be accustomed to planning a better financial future. In addition, they can also avoid financial management errors that are currently widespread, such as online gambling and others," she concluded.
