SURABAYA, September 11, 2024. As part of its commitment to support the growth of traditional markets, PT Bank Pembangunan Daerah Jawa Timur Tbk (bankjatim) will revitalize Pasar Kembang, a market owned by the Surabaya City Government. The support involves both physical revitalization and rebranding of the market to make it more modern and well-organized. Held at Pasar Kembang Surabaya, the event was attended by bankjatim’s Director of Micro, Retail, and Medium Enterprises R. Arief Wicaksono and Surabaya Mayor Eri Cahyadi on Wednesday (11/9).
Arief explained that markets serve as economic hubs that can create a broad multiplier effect on the local economy, including Pasar Kembang. As is widely known, Pasar Kembang suffered a fire in 2021, which destroyed the second floor. As a result, part of the second floor is now unusable, with its structure severely damaged.
Given these conditions, bankjatim is committed to supporting the restoration of Pasar Kembang’s facilities and infrastructure to help the market attract more visitors. With this revitalization, Pasar Kembang is expected to become cleaner and more appealing to the public. “This revitalization aims to enhance the market’s appeal for buying and selling activities, thereby contributing more to the city’s economic growth. But it’s also important to be creative in revitalizing the market to attract visitors and make it more competitive,” he said.
According to Arief, markets play a very important role in the daily lives of the people. Therefore, bankjatim is committed to supporting the development of market digitalization. “Our goal in supporting digitalization in the market is to strengthen payment systems and financial inclusion, making merchant transactions more effective and efficient. As a result, trade volume will increase, and merchants will hopefully continue to grow,” he added.
In developing the digital ecosystem at Pasar Kembang, all transactions between sellers and buyers will utilize bankjatim’s QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard). QRIS can be accessed via bankjatim’s JConnect mobile banking or other mobile banking platforms. Furthermore, local taxes and retribution payments can be made directly using bankjatim’s virtual account system, enabling a more convenient and efficient shopping experience. “Digitalizing the market is crucial because it offers consumers a new shopping experience that’s more practical and comfortable. It also provides transaction history for sellers, ensuring better documentation of sales records,” Arief explained.
In addition to implementing digital transactions, bankjatim is also rebranding Pasar Kembang’s supporting infrastructure such as merchant tables and chairs, stall number boards, booth signs, and more. “We will also actively educate merchants about opening savings accounts at bankjatim and the financial services we offer. This is part of our commitment to expanding banking access and supporting business growth in traditional markets,” Arief continued.
With this revitalization, the negative impressions often associated with traditional markets—such as being dirty, hot, smelly, and muddy—will become a thing of the past. What was once disorganized will transform into a clean, well-arranged, and fully cashless market that still maintains the essence of a traditional marketplace, including the cultural element of price bargaining between sellers and buyers.
Meanwhile, Mayor Eri Cahyadi welcomed the collaboration between bankjatim and Pasar Kembang Surabaya in advancing the local market ecosystem. “The various facilities and banking services provided by bankjatim can be utilized by merchants to support business development and offer better service to both sellers and buyers in traditional markets. We also hope Pasar Kembang will become a model market in Surabaya in the future,” he said.
